SHILLONG, JUNE 6: A mother of three children on Thursday began her indefinite hunger strike in front of the Secretariat demanding immediate construction of the Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur road.
Bindas Syiem, a resident of Umden (Ri Bhoi District) and a farmer by profession, sent a clear message that she will not call off her protest till the government is ready to fulfil the demand.
Syiem stated that she was totally fed up with the false promises made during elections.
“Those who win and lose in the elections have promised to give us this road but it turned out to be just a lie. Because of this, I am totally frustrated given the fact that I personally had to face a lot of difficulties due to the condition of this road. Therefore, I feel that I have every right to demand for a better road,” she told reporters.
Syiem also informed that she had already met the executive engineer of PWD (Roads) and had also written to the deputy commissioner on the matter but “I am not satisfied with the reply they have.
She said that it is not her duty to meet the deputy chief minister in-charge PWD (Roads) for clarification on the status of the said road.
“I am determined to proceed ahead (with the protest). I will not leave from here till the government is ready to providhttps://youtu.be/1XuLEEPj-1Ye us with a better road,” she stated.
According to her, she had no intention to seek support from other people in her fight for better road connectivity.
