Guwahati, Dec 12: The detention of Thokchom Sujata, a prominent Meitei women’s leader and convenor of Image Meira, by Delhi Police has triggered widespread condemnation. Sujata was detained on Thursday at her place of stay, preventing her from participating in the Nupi Lal observance at Jantar Mantar, organized by the Delhi Meitei Coordinating Committee (DMCC).
Delhi Police reportedly cited unverified intelligence suggesting Sujata intended to stage a nude protest. However, DMCC media coordinator Naorem Lilina dismissed the allegations as baseless and a pretext to suppress peaceful assembly. “Her intention was never to incite violence or engage in unlawful activities. This is a blatant infringement on her rights and an insult to the legacy of Nupi Lal,” Lilina stated.
The Nupi Lal observance commemorates the 1939 movement when Manipuri women courageously resisted British colonial oppression and economic exploitation. This year’s event also aimed to raise awareness about ongoing challenges in Manipur, including the Jiribam Massacre and the disappearance of L. Kamalbabu from an army camp in November 2024.
Manipur is witnessing a resurgence of the Nupi Lal spirit, with thousands of women protesting on the streets. Their demands include accountability for Kamalbabu’s disappearance within an army complex and allegations that the central government is supporting Chin-Kuki militants under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreements. Protesters have also called for the protection of Manipur’s territorial integrity and the repeal of policies perceived as divisive.
Another key demand is the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which many view as a tool of oppression. The DMCC has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, outlining their grievances and demands.
“This resurgence of the Nupi Lal spirit is a testament to the strength and unity of Manipuri women,” said Lilina. She emphasized that the women’s unwavering determination highlights their demand for justice and accountability, calling on the Union government to address the concerns of Meitei women and the people of Manipur.
