Shillong, May 16: Director General of Police (DGP) Dr LR Bishnoi on Tuesday said the SPs of the five districts of Garo Hills region are likely to submit their respective reports to verify the recent input received about regrouping of the disbanded GNLA, within a week.

“All the district SPs are verifying this input in their respective areas. Once verification is completed they will submit their report to us. We have not fixed any timeline as it may take time as some interior areas are there. They have to check and cross check from each and every remote area. I think within a week they will probably submit their reports,” Bishnoi told reporters.

When asked, the DGP said that the input will remain as input till it is verified adding “Once the verification report is received at our hand then only I will be in a position to come and talk to you on this.”

“One the reports are received from all the districts we will be in position to say what the authenticity of this input is,” he added.

The issue came to light after an internal memo by a DSP-ranked officer in West Garo Hills that was leaked and surfaced online.

The internal memo had claimed that the dreaded Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was regrouping and was on a recruitment drive in the entire region to once become a force to reckon with.

The memo added that as many as 500 youths from various districts of Garo Hills had joined the outfit and had been sent to countries like Myanmar and in Nagaland for basic training. It also claimed that various big businessmen, who were close associates of the GNLA earlier, were aiding the outfit to regroup.
