Dibrugarh: Fresh erosion at Puja ghat area, preventive measures taken

Dibrugarh, June 13: Fresh erosion caused by the Brahmaputra was witnessed in Dibrugarh’s Puja Ghat area on Tuesday amid the ongoing work being carried out by the water resources department to prevent the disaster.

Meanwhile, prevention work to stop the ongoing erosion is being carried out by the Water resources department.

After the reports of water erosion, Dibrugarh MLA Prashanta Phukan and Deputy commissioner Biswajit Pegu rushed to the area to take stock of the situation and directed the officials to mobilise men and machineries to prevent the river from gobbling up the land.

The stretch hit by the fresh round of erosion is being fortified by geo-bags as immediate measures.

While speaking to the reporters, Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan said, the erosion started in the area since 2 pm last night. Preventive measures have been taken to stop the ongoing erosion by the concerned department. He said, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have been informed regarding the matter.

MLA Prasanta Phukan said, “the river course has been changed and the river which has been flowing from the upstream has suddenly started hitting the lower areas causing erosion. He added, that a proposal has been submitted to Asian Development Bank(ADB) for permanent solution of erosion throughout the DTP dyke.

Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu said, “Earlier, a massive damaged was caused due to erosion in Koilaghat area of Dibrugarh. He further said that
protection measures has been taken in that area but now fresh erosion started in Puja ghat area from last night. He further said that Water resources department has taken measures to stop the ongoing erosion. He also said that erosion has been stedy.

Erosion, causes serious threat for the people of Dibrugarh town and now with this fresh erosion has yet again panicked the residents who are living near the DTP dyke.

A resident of the area said, that they need permanent solution to stop the erosion. If permanent step is not taken soon, the erosion will create havoc for the people.
