Shillong, July 6: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday informed that he had spoken to Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for the transfer of cantonment land to the state and that the process is on.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma said there are two parts of the cantonment areas, one is the military zones and the other is the civil zones.
“There is a discussion going on with the Government of India to transfer the civil zones of the cantonment board to the municipal board. It is in a very advanced stage and we do expect positive results from the Government of India,” he said.
The chief minister said, “Approximately, about 40 acres is there. Total cantonment area is about 400 acres but the military zone is maximum but I stand corrected on the number, it is either 200 or 400, I can’t remember but 10% of it is a civil zone.”
When asked, Sangma said, “It will all depend on what the rules say, it is not about what I want or what anybody wants, it all depends on rules and depends on the government of India and defence ministry what direction they give.”
