Tura, June 22: The District Level Inter-School Subroto Mukherjee Cup Football tournament concluded on Saturday at the Chandmari Football Turf in Tura, West Garo Hills. Organized by the Office of the District Sports Officer, West Garo Hills, Tura, the tournament featured exciting matches among Under-15 boys’, Under-17 boys’, and Under-17 girls’ teams.
Starting on June 6, the tournament saw participation from 32 schools across the West Garo Hills District: 15 schools in the Under-17 boys’ category, 8 schools in the Under-17 girls’ category, and 9 schools in the Under-15 boys’ category.
In the Under-17 girls’ category, Dalia Secondary School, Tura, emerged victorious, with Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Tura, taking the runners-up trophy. The best player award went to Niksera Ch Marak of Government Boys Higher Secondary School.
For the Under-15 boys’, Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Tura, claimed the winner’s trophy, with Montfort Centre of Education, Tura, securing the runners-up spot. The best player in this category was Mallenga N Sangma of Government Boys Higher Secondary School.
In the Under-17 boys’ category, Montfort Secondary School, Dilne Bolchugre, demonstrated their prowess by winning the tournament. Montfort Centre for Education, Tura, was the runner-up, and the best player award was earned by Chando Ch Marak of Montfort Secondary School, Dilne Bolchugre.
The closing ceremony was graced by Jasper P Marak, Retd. Deputy Director, DSYA; Silje A Sangma, District Social Welfare Officer; and Saljagring M Marak, DSO, Tura, who presented the awards to the winners.
Notably, the winners from this district-level tournament will advance to compete in the State Level Subroto Mukherjee Cup, representing West Garo Hills.
Subroto Cup Football Tournament is a prestigious international inter-school football tournament that is held annually in New Delhi, India. Named after the Indian Air Force Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee, it is an annual event that began in 1960. Students from different countries across Asia participate in this tournament, making it one of the more noteworthy school-level football competitions.
The first tournament was held in 1960, with participation of about 50 school teams. Till 1997, the tournament was conducted only for Boys U-17 category. In 1998 a new category i.e. Boys U-14 was introduced. To further the prime objective of the Society to encourage soccer in the country, the tournament has been extended to Girls U-17 category in 2012.
From a modest start in 1960 with teams only from Delhi, today, almost 34,000 school teams from all over the country take part in this prestigious tournament starting from the state level. Teams from Brazil, Australia, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Switzerland, Sweden, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Israel, Bhutan, UAE, Indonesia and Uzbekistan have participated in this tournament in the recent past giving it an international stature.
