Don Bosco College HSS Girls, Don Bosco School Boys win Inter-School Basketball Tournament in Tura

Tura, Aug 3: The Inter-School Basketball Tournament concluded on a high at the Christian Girls’ Higher Secondary School’s basketball court in Tura on Friday, with the DBS Boys and DBC HSS Girls crowned champions.

Organized by the District Basketball Association (DBA) under the aegis of the Meghalaya Basketball Association, Shillong, and in collaboration with the District Sports Office, Tura, the event drew significant enthusiasm from players and spectators alike.

Commencing on July 29, the tournament was played on a knockout basis, with teams vying for the coveted trophy. A total of 11 teams participated, including seven boys’ teams and four girls’ teams, showcasing their skills and sportsmanship on the court.

In the girls’ category, the final match saw Don Bosco College Higher Secondary Section, Tura (DBC HSS) face off against Don Bosco School, Tura (DBS). The DBC HSS girls’ team secured a decisive victory with a score of 44-14, earning the winning trophy. Their opponents, the DBS girls’ team, received the runners-up trophy. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) award of the match was given to Ame Chisime D Sangma of the DBC HSS girls’ team.

In the boys’ category, the finale featured a showdown between Don Bosco College Higher Secondary Section, Tura (DBC HSS) and Don Bosco School, Tura (DBS). The DBS boys’ team emerged victorious with a score of 44-30, claiming the winning trophy. The DBC HSS boys’ team received the runners-up trophy, and James Tirkey of the DBS boys’ team was named MVP.

Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Jagdish Chelani, attended the event and distributed the trophies. The tournament was made possible by the funds provided by the District Sports Office and the District Administration.

Despite facing challenges such as the lack of a dedicated basketball court in Tura, the DBA has been proactive in promoting the sport among young athletes. They have submitted a proposal for a dedicated basketball court in Tura to the administration and are hopeful for a positive response in the future.

The association has also been deploying senior players in different schools around the district to build the basketball culture at a grassroot level and is also planning to organize an Inter-Club basketball tournament for the youths of Garo Hills.
