Shillong, Jan 11: The National People’s Party (NPP) has chosen the ideal candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary Seat, claimed Cabinet Minister and NPP leader Rakkam Sangma during discussions on the party’s decision to nominate Dr. M Ampareen as the official candidate for the MP election from the Shillong Seat.
Addressing reporters in Shillong on Wednesday, Rakkam affirmed that the NPP has selected the most qualified candidate and the best woman for the election. Consequently, he stressed that the people of Shillong should determine whom they wish to send to Delhi.
Emphasising Meghalaya’s unique status as the only matrilineal society in India, Rakkam underscored the importance of electing a “Mother” to represent the Shillong Parliamentary Seat in Delhi. He highlighted that the timing is opportune to send a woman MP to Parliament, especially as 33 percent of the seats are reserved under the Women Reservation Act.
Expressing confidence in their victory, Sangma stated that he sees no reason why the NPP would not secure both the Shillong seat and Tura.
“Dr. Ampareen is among the best and aligns with the standards of Shillong in Parliament,” he remarked.
Furthermore, he mentioned that the residents of Shillong would take pride in witnessing Dr. Ampareen wearing a traditional Khasi Jaiñsem inside the Parliament.
“Shillong people will be proud to see Dr. Ampareen speaking in Parliament wearing Khasi traditional dress,” he added.
