Guwahati, Jan 20: In a significant operation against contraband, security forces arrested three drug peddlers and seized drugs and ganja (cannabis) in the past 24 hours across three northeastern states—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram.

In southern Assam’s Cachar district, drugs worth Rs 1 crore were recovered, leading to the arrest of one individual. Police intercepted a vehicle at the Digharkhal Toll Gate, which had travelled from neighbouring Mizoram. Over 8,640 bottles of Codeine Phosphate cough syrup and 2 kg of ganja, valued at Rs 1 crore, were seized from the vehicle. The use of cough syrups as drugs is a prevalent issue in several northeastern states and neighbouring Bangladesh.
