DSEO organises District-Level Science Exhibition in Tura on ‘Science and Technology for Society’

Tura, May 29: The office of the District School Education Officer, West Garo Hills on Wednesday organized a one-day District Level Science, Mathematics, and Environment Exhibition for Children at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Tura, under the theme ‘Science and Technology for Society.’

In an effort to foster students’ interest in studying science and highlight its importance for personal growth and career opportunities, the DSEO office has been organizing these events annually in various districts of the state. These events aim to popularize interest in science, mathematics, and environmental sciences among students to nurture young minds for future scientific research and development.

Eight schools from different parts of the district, including urban and rural areas, participated in the competition, displaying handcrafted dioramas on various sub-themes such as health, lifestyle for the environment, agriculture, communication & transport, and computational thinking.

The inaugural program was attended by S. K. Saha, Retd. DSEO, Tura, as the chief guest. In his address, he emphasized the importance of science for the betterment of society and later interacted with the students about their project submissions. Josthine R Marak, Assistant Lecturer, Dept. Of Chemistry, Government Boys Higher Secondary School, and Grazia D. K. Sangma, Principal, Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Tura, were also present at the event.

The dioramas presented by the participants were meticulously scrutinized by judges, including Jojrang G. D. Shira, Assistant Professor, Tura Government College; Saljagring R Sangma, Lecturer, Tura Government College; and Arlinda M Marak, Senior Assistant Teacher, Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Tura.

Kezia Ch Marak of Nokrek Heights School, Tura, was awarded the first prize for her project on conservation and management strategies for biodiversity. The second prize went to Akimbi D Sangma of St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Tura, for her demonstration on the applications of solar drip irrigation system. The third prize went to Max N Marak of Aeroville Higher Secondary School, Tura, for his project on the implementation of vertical farming, and the fourth prize went to Tamchi Elly N Marak of Little Flower Higher Secondary School, Tura, for her ‘Hilltop Harmony,’ a presentation on sustainable integrated farming systems with agriculture.

The winners of this district-level science exhibition will have the opportunity to represent their models and innovations at the State Level Science, Mathematics, and Environment Exhibition in Shillong and further stand a chance in the National-level science exhibition as well.
