Shillong, Aug 27: Defending champions Mohun Bagan staged a thrilling comeback to secure their place in the final of the 133rd Durand Cup 2024, defeating Bengaluru FC in the second semi-final at Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata, on Tuesday.
Bengaluru FC took the lead with a penalty from captain Sunil Chhetri in the 43rd minute, ending the first half with a 1-0 advantage. Shortly after the break, Bengaluru doubled their lead with a goal from Vinith in the 50th minute.
However, Mohun Bagan, determined to defend their title, fought back. Dimitri Petratos converted a penalty in the 60th minute to bring the score to 2-1. In the final minute of regulation time, Anirudh Thapa leveled the score at 2-2, pushing the match into a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Bengaluru FC scored three goals but missed two, while Mohun Bagan netted four and missed just one, clinching the match with a 4-2 victory.
Mohun Bagan will now face NorthEast United FC in the final on Saturday at the same stadium in Kolkata.
