Early Warning System to tackle recurring landslides in Assam

Must read

Guwahati, August 16: Assam now has an early warning system in place to tackle the recurring threat of landslides.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the implementation of the Experimental Regional Landslide Early Warning System (LEWS) was signed on Friday in Guwahati between the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) and the Geological Survey of India (GSI).

Gyanendra Dev Tripathi, Chief Executive Officer of ASDMA and Siladitya Sengupta, Deputy Director General of GSI’s Assam Unit, signed the agreement.

Landslides have been a persistent problem in Assam, often managed through ad-hoc responses that fail to prevent the annual recurrence of these disasters. Hilly regions such as Dima Hasao, Karbi Anglong, Cachar, Karimganj, and Kamrup (M) districts have been particularly vulnerable, suffering losses in both lives and infrastructure.

Recently, the focus has shifted toward reducing landslide risks by developing regional early warning systems. This includes the integration of static landslide susceptibility maps and dynamic rainfall forecasts. The MoU aims to establish institutional cooperation for implementing an experimental LEWS in Dima Hasao and Cachar, with plans to expand the system across the state in the future.

GSI has also introduced the “Bhooskhalan” app, which allows people, institutions, and government agencies to report landslides in their areas, enabling more efficient disaster prediction and mitigation through crowdsourcing. Additionally, the “Bhusanket” portal, which provides comprehensive updates on landslides across India, is now accessible online.

The signing ceremony was attended by Ms Dainia C War, Director of GSI’s Assam Unit, along with other officials from ASDMA and GSI.
