Shillong, July 11: Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district has emerged as one of the leading districts in the state in implementation of Jal Shakti Abhiyan-Catch the Rain programme (JSA-CTR).
This was revealed after Angshuman Dey, Joint-Secretary, Ministry of DONER and Secretary, North Eastern Council, who is also the JSA-CTR Central Nodal Officer for East Khasi Hills District, on Thursday reviewed the programme at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here.
East Khasi Hills under the programme has constructed and geo-tagged about 3526 water bodies and structures. These interventions were undertaken by various line departments like Soil and Water Conservation, Block Development Offices, Water Resources, Public Health Engineering and Forests and Environment Department and others.
Moreover, district and block level committees have also been constituted and these committees are in the process of preparing the block and district level water security plans for the district.
The Ministry of Jal Shakti launched the JSA in 2019 across 1,592 blocks out of 2,836 blocks in 256 water stressed districts of the country. In 2021, JSA-CTR (Catch the Rain) was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Meanwhile, Dey, while appreciating the works done by the district said there are many other areas where the district and block teams can improve upon such as involvement of women as part of the Nari Shakti to Jal Shakti campaign.
He also encouraged the district to “activate and innovate” the Jal Shakti Kendra to act as an information centre for the citizens to seek information and assistance in the implementation of JSA.
During the review meeting, S Warjri, additional DC on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner, gave a presentation on the programme being implemented in the district.
