The bandh was initially called by Silchar-based political party Barak Democratic Front (BDF) which was later supported by other parties like Congress, TMC and AIUDF.

According to Paul, police are forcing businessmen to open their shops and asking the transport owners to send as many vehicles as possible on the streets to show that there is no bandh.

“The attitude of police is a big concern because during 1961 language movement, Assam police open fired on protesters which killed 11 youths,” Paul added.

The 12-hour bandh started at 5am on Tuesday and it has received support from the common people. The streets were empty since morning and almost all the shops are closed in three districts of Barak Valley.
