Shillong, Jan 17: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong today emphasized that efforts are underway to resolve land disputes quickly, directing relevant departments to accelerate their efforts.
Tynsong chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the progress of crucial road infrastructure projects under the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) aimed at enhancing connectivity and supporting development in the state.
He revealed that nearly 75% of the meeting discussions centred around ongoing land disputes, which have caused delays in compensation and extended project timelines. Tynsong reiterated that these ₹5,000 crore projects would significantly transform Meghalaya’s road infrastructure in the coming years.
Key projects under review included the ₹705.83 crore Dainadubi-Darugre Road, the ₹801 crore Darugre-Williamnagar Road, and the ₹359 crore Tura-Dalu Road. The review also focused on the Nongstoin-Rambrai-Kyrshai Road, the Shillong Western Bypass, the ₹1,000+ crore Shillong-Dawki Road, and the proposed high-speed corridor from Mawlyngkhung near Umiam Lake to Panchgram in Assam.
Tynsong noted the high-speed corridor project, which will be a “completely greenfield” road to minimize disruption to local communities. The project, currently in the survey and DPR phase, is projected to exceed ₹25,000 crore, with ₹15,000 crore allocated for Meghalaya.
Tynsong also addressed environmental concerns, ensuring that all projects are following environmental and forest clearance procedures and compensatory afforestation guidelines. He confirmed the necessary clearances had been obtained for defence land issues, and highlighted ongoing discussions about the second phase of the Nongstoin-Rambrai-Kyrshai Road to improve connectivity between Meghalaya and Assam.
Reaffirming the state government’s commitment, Tynsong concluded, “We are committed to completing these projects on time, and once finished, they will reduce congestion, enhance trade, and significantly improve connectivity in the region.”
