Eight militants of Kuki Tribal Union surrender at Haflong

Guwahati, Aug 19: With the aim to join mainstream, as many as eight militants of the Kuki Tribal Union (KTU) surrendered before the Commanding Officer, 11 Assam Rifles at its camp base at Sarkari Bagan at Haflong on Friday.

It is learnt that the Assam Rifles had been convincing the cadres since months after their extortion/demand activities was detected. It is stated that all surrendered cadres were break away members of militant group Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) who had joined the KTU.

“The group operates mainly in Kuki dominated area of Nagaland, Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong in Assam and Manipur. The group recently started collecting taxes in Kuki’s area of Jiribam and Tamenglong,” a press statement from Assam Rifles said.

“The group is affiliated with the NSCN(IM) and are receiving training from them at Hebron camp in Nagaland. It can be said they are wings of NSCN(IM) since it’s the only Kuki militant organization working closely with the NSCN (IM),” the statement further said.

The Kuki Tribal Union (KTU) NSCN/GPRN was formed in the early 1960s as part of the NSCN-IM and it’s headquartered at Hebron in Nagaland. It is presided over by Lh Paohao Khongsai, who is also Steering committee member of NSCN (IM).
