Nongpoh, Feb 11: A tragic road accident claimed the life of an elderly man after he was struck by an escort vehicle of the Director General of Assam Rifles (DGAR) on Tuesday in Nongpoh.
The incident occurred in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office in Ri Bhoi. According to eyewitnesses, the escort vehicle was speeding at the time of the accident, which ultimately led to the victim’s fatal injuries.
The elderly man was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention but succumbed to his injuries. The accident has sparked concerns about road safety and the need for stricter regulations on official convoy speeds.
According to reports, the incident happened while the escort vehicle ML 05 Y 3232, which was escorting the Director General while en route to Guwahati Airport, hit the elder person who is identified as Bahadur Sunar (69) from Shangbangla village.
The vehicle struck him while he was attempting to cross the road on his bicycle.
After the collision, the escort vehicle also hit a road divider, causing one of its front tyres to burst.
The victim was immediately rushed to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for treatment. However, due to the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to a medical facility in Shillong, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
