Shillong, Feb 14: Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) on Tuesday has launched a new program aimed at encouraging voter participation at Jaiaw Lumshyiap, Lumpyllon and to address the low voter turnout. The theme of the program was “My Vote, My Valentine” which started on Valentine’s Day and 14 days before election.

This initiative is a State Mission known as ‘Mission 300’. The program started with a series of events and initiatives designed to engage voters and educate them on the importance of participating in elections. The Meghalaya Model United Nations conducted an event called “The Flames of Democracy” and The Symbol of Sneh Society through fashion performed a special fashion show which spoke about the importance of voting.

The goal of the program is to increase voter turnout in the 300 polling station, which are below the state average. “Mission 300 are the 300 polling stations which are below the State average. The State average is already very healthy at 86.90, almost 90%. However, in East Khasi Hills it is on 83% but I am sure with the co-operation of all the Rangbah Shnongs under the leadership of S.C. Sadhu and Saloni and most importantly the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong, this percentage will rise to nearly 90%,” stated F. R. Kharkongor, the Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya.

The CEO further believes that it is essential for all citizens to exercise their right to vote and that the program will help to achieve this goal. The program will include voter registration drives and outreach to underrepresented communities.

The chief electoral officer hoped that the program will not only increase voter turnout but also help to build a more engaged and informed electorate.
