Dibrugarh, Jan 22: Seven female tea garden workers sustained injuries after a wild elephant attacked them near the Tipam tea estate in the Naharkatia area of Dibrugarh district on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred as a group of workers was heading to their daily duties along the Tipam hills. While most managed to flee, seven women were caught off guard and attacked, resulting in serious injuries for four and minor injuries for three.

The injured workers—Rashmi Gowala, Mamoni Gowala, Shilpi Bhuyan, Jaya Bawri, Sonali Gowala, Rupali Hazda, and Bobita Bhuyan—were immediately rushed to the Naharkatia Civil Hospital for treatment.
“There were 17 of us walking on the road when suddenly the elephant attacked us from behind. Seven of us were injured,” one of the workers recounted.
The Tipam tea estate, located near the hills, frequently sees elephants wandering into human settlements, a result of shrinking forest cover that drives wildlife closer to inhabited areas in search of food.
Human-elephant conflict has been on the rise in Assam, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts and effective measures to mitigate such incidents.
