Guwahati, May 6: The poaching of elephants in Assam’s Manas National Park- a World Heritage Site has thrown up questions on the well-being of the national park.
The park which was recovering well with sightings of numerous wildlife species and increase in population of rhinos and tigers had given hope that all was well in the park. It needs to be reminded that the park got back the heritage tag back in 2011 after being in danger status for almost two decades.
Two suspected poachers were arrested on Monday from Amtenga in Assam’s Chirang district was arrested for killing wild elephant in Manas National Park.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Abid Borgoyari, Mahesh Islary, and Jiron Basumatary.
The trio were suspect to be linked to recent elephant poaching cases in the park along the India-Bhutan border.
Following the discovery of three elephant carcasses in Manas National Park on May 2, the police launched an investigation arresting three poachers.
3 poachers were arrested along with 2 illegal guns, gunpowder, walkie-talkies, poaching gear was seized and two elephant tusks recovered.
The killings occurred near the Palengshi beat, close to Pillar No. 194 along the Indo-Bhutan border.
According to reports, the two elephants were found dead near the border post, one of them reportedly beheaded with the severed head missing. The third was located under the jurisdiction of the Banchum Beat Office.
Authorities are currently investigating whether the trio was directly involved in the killings or if they are part of a wider poaching network operating in and around the protected reserve.
