SHILLONG, Aug 19: United Democratic Party (UDP) Chief Adviser Bindo M Lanong has asked the party leadership to ensure selection of candidates for the upcoming 2023 assembly elections is done as per the constitution of the party.
In his letter to the UDP chief Metbah Lyngdoh and general secretary Jemino Mawthoh on Wednesday, Lanong said that there is need to rectify the decision to select candidates by the core committee as it is against the constitution of the party.
“The districts should send their recommendations as per the constitution and as per practice and if there is any dissatisfaction on the action of the districts, the State Election Committee should correct the same,” he said.
Lanong also informed that many have expressed concern over the manner in which selection of candidates is being done as leaders of the party in many districts were not given due consideration and respect in this regard.
“This action by the party leaders will no doubt affect the party as it was also informed to me by leaders from Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi as well as other districts that you are instead favouring those who are not from the party because they are big business tycoons. I don’t know to what extent their money can make them win (elections) or if they will have the desire to strengthen the party,” he said.
