Shillong, May 31: The 2nd year M.Sc. Nursing students of the College of Nursing, NEIGRIHMS, successfully conducted a mock fire and safety drill on the theme “Escape to Safety” at the Multipurpose Hall on May 30. The program commenced with a welcome address from Ms Ohamdikahun Khongiong, the organizing secretary. This was followed by insightful speeches on the importance of fire safety and fire incidents in India by Prof. Nochovono Tase, Principal cum Professor, College of Nursing, NEIGRIHMS, and Dr. Saurabh Singh, Assistant Professor, Hospital Administration and Deputy Medical Superintendent, NEIGRIHMS, respectively.
Diving deeper into fire safety, M.Sc. Nursing students delivered presentations on crucial topics. These included a comprehensive overview, the basic characteristics of fire, the different fire types, the proper use of fire extinguishers, and the importance of mock drills.
Ms Rosylyne Shangpliang then presented a detailed breakdown of the “Fire and Safety Mock Drill” scenario, followed by the mock drill putting the students’ fire safety training and response skills to the test. Following the drill, a debriefing session was led by Shri B. K. Barman, Fire Guard, NEIGRIHMS. His valuable feedback and insights provided the students with a chance to learn from the simulation. To conclude the program, Ms Moutushi Kakoti delivered the vote of thanks. A commemorative photo session and light refreshments capped off the successful event.
Prof. Nalin Mehta, Director, NEIGRIHMS, on the occasion, said, “These are very crucial survival skills and should be imparted to all the personnel through regular mock drills, especially in educational institutions. Fire preparedness saves valuable lives, and its relevance is immense in hospitals, where it is difficult to mobilize sick patients. Proper training can help overcome this disadvantage considerably”.
This fire and safety mock drill served as a valuable learning experience for both the students and the NEIGRIHMS community, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and effective response in case of a fire emergency.
