Tura, Aug 2: The District Administration of West Garo Hills carried out an eviction drive along the Tura – Dalu Road on Friday for the expansion of the road.
The stretch of the road is part of National Highway 217 (formerly known as NH-51).
The eviction drive was carried out from Rongkhon to Chitoktak in the vicinity of Tura. Rongkhon and Chitoktak are about 6 km and 4.6 km from the centre of Tura, respectively.
The drive follows the directives of the High Court to hand over the Right of Way (ROW) land to the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
According to a notice issued by the Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), West Garo Hills, the High Court had mandated the district administration to transfer the ROW land to NHIDCL at the earliest as per High Court Order No. (MC WP(C)) No. 88 of 2021 in WP(C) No. 239 of 2020) dated 16-12-2021. The notice, dated August 1, 2024, informed all land and structure owners in the affected areas to remove their properties and belongings as eviction will be carried out for the construction of the NH-51 (new name is National Highway 217) Tura-Dalu Road Project from Km 85 to Km 95 and Km 101 to Km 145 from 2nd August, 2024 onwards.
The eviction drive saw a significant deployment of security personnel, including heavy police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) units to thwart any opposition or obstacle during the drive. There were no major tussles reported between the administration officers and the public at the venue.
