Hyderabad, Sept 09: In a major development, the president of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu, was arrested by the Crime Investigation Bureau (CID) of Andhra Police on Saturday morning.
He has been arrested on allegations of corruption.
The arrest was made after a massive stand-off between the police and TDP supporters on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. A substantial police contingent, led by Nandyal range DIG Raghurami Reddy and the CID, descended upon Naidu’s camp at RK Function Hall around 3 am to arrest him. However, the TDP members gathered in huge numbers and resisted police efforts. Further, the SPG unit guarding Naidu also did not hand over the former CM to the police citing adherence to protocol until 5:30 am.
Ultimately, at approximately 6 am, the police approached Naidu’s vehicle, escorted him out, and took him into custody. The DIG informed him of his arrest in connection with the AP Skill Development Corporation scam, in which he is designated as accused No. 1.
The notice issued to Naidu by M Dhanunjayudu, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Economic Offences Wing -II, CID, stated, “It is to inform you that you have been arrested… at 6 am at R K Function Hall, Gnanapuram, H/o Moolasagaram, Nandyala town and it is a non-bailable offence.”
