A supermoon is a phenomenon where the moon appears larger and brighter than usual due to its closest proximity to Earth in its elliptical orbit. This upcoming supermoon on August 1 is expected to be one of the most impressive ones of the year.
Why is full moon,known as Sturgeon Moon?
The Full Moon that occurs in August is known as Sturgeon Moon. August’s full moon is named after North America’s largest fish, the sturgeon. This full moon is often associated with abundance and harvest, symbolizing a time of plenty and growth.
This largest fish is often referred to as living fossils. However, although they existed largely unchanged for over 100 million years but due to over fishing and habitat loss, their numbers have seen a dramatic decline.
Full moon also have other names, including Grain Moon, Corn Moon, Lynx Moon, and Lightning Moon.
When to watch the Sturgeon Moon 2023: Date and Time?
The Sturgeon Moon is set to occur on August 1, 2023 at 2:32 pm Eastern Time which is 12:02 am in Indian Standard Time (IST).
Also, a second full moon, known as a blue moon, will occur in August.
2023 is special for super-moon’s, as a total of four such occurrences is set to occur. Notably, the August 30th full moon will be a blue moon, signifying the second full moon of the month. So, mark your calendars for two moonlit evenings of enchantment.
