Must read

Sikkim, Oct 5: A fake news is doing the rounds on social media about the Teesta Stage 5 dam run by NHPC, which has been demolished by a fresh new flash flood.

But the reality is that the structure still stands. However, an employee working at the dam has lost his life.

According to reports, the body of an employee of the Teesta Stage V dam has been recovered from the control room of the dam site.

Sources said that he was stuck inside the control room, which is near the dam. The body of the employee was found around 10 a.m., almost 40 hours after the flash flood.

The victim, identified as Dawa Lepcha, was in his late 30s, and he is a resident of Samdong Village nearby.

He was married with two kids; he has been working with NHPC Teesta Stage Five since 2008. He was the technical staff.

Teesta Stage V comprises an 88.6-metre-high concrete gravity dam at Dikchu, three penstocks of length 321 m, and a 17.2-kilometre-long headrace tunnel (HRT) housed on the left bank. The underground power house near Sirwani has an installed capacity of 510 MW (3×170 MW turbines).

The 88.6-metre-high dam had a control room at the top of the dam, which was damaged. Uprooted trees, debris, and other remnants of damage were seen at the top of the high structure.
