Tura, March 29: Farmers in Northeast India have been urged to shift towards export-oriented agriculture to tap into global markets and enhance economic opportunities.
A regional workshop on “Empowering Farm Families of NER through Export-Oriented Agriculture: Strategies for Sustainable Development” was held at the College of Community Science (CCS), Central Agricultural University (Imphal), Tura, on March 28. Organized by the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Women in Agriculture (WIA), the workshop aimed to promote export-oriented agriculture among farm families in the North Eastern Region (NER).
The workshop provided a collaborative platform for farm families, experts, and policymakers to exchange ideas and discuss practical strategies for promoting export-oriented agriculture and empowering farm women across the NER.

Dr. Jyoti V. Vastrad, Dean of CCS, Tura, emphasized the numerous prospects and opportunities available for farmers and farm women in the region to engage in export-oriented agriculture.
A notable event highlight was the felicitation of Padma Shri Awardee Nanadro B. Marak, a prominent farmer from West Garo Hills, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to agriculture. Additionally, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), CAU-I, East Garo Hills distributed vermi-beds to farmers and farm women, promoting the production of organic manure from farm and kitchen waste.
The workshop also featured Mr. Dipin, Senior Consultant at Agri PMU, Government of Meghalaya, as a special invitee. He shared his experiences motivating and establishing farmers as successful entrepreneurs in the state. Dr. Binodini Sethi, Professor of Agribusiness Management (ABM), CPGS-AS, CAU, Umiam, delivered an insightful session on the challenges and opportunities for unlocking export potential in the NER.
Further enriching the discussions, Sri Nilesh Trivedy, Assistant Director of MSME, Indore, Madhya Pradesh, conducted a session on strategies to support women farmers and entrepreneurs in the export sector of the NER.

The technical sessions were chaired by several distinguished experts. Dr. Namita Singh highlighted the contribution of AICRP-WIA in empowering farm women through technological interventions and entrepreneurship development. Dr. Hussain from KVK, CAU-I, East Garo Hills, and Dr. Monica Singh, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK, West Garo Hills, led discussions on supporting women farmers in the export sector.
The workshop also covered topics such as daily activity profiles of farm women, capacity-building initiatives, and training programs for livelihood enhancement. Experts, including Dr. Bijaya Laxmi Sahu, Dr. Puspita Das, Dr. Kavita Bisht, and Dr. Anupama Mishra from AICRP, presented valuable insights on these subjects.
