Fatal collision on NH-6 in Ri Bhoi: One Dead, multiple injured

Nongpoh, May 27: A tragic road accident on National Highway 6 in Ri Bhoi early Sunday morning resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries. The collision involved a Bolero Pickup and a Maruti Swift Dzire.

According to police reports, the incident occurred around 10:30 AM. Upon receiving the alert, law enforcement swiftly arrived at the scene in Umran, where they found the Bolero Pickup (registration No. ML 05 AB3102) and the Swift Dzire (registration No. AS 25 DC9118) severely damaged. By the time the police arrived, passersby had already transported the injured to a nearby health center.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the Bolero Pickup, driven by Stanphan Ryntathiang, 21, from Patharlyndan in the Eastern West Khasi Hills District, was traveling towards Nongpoh. He was accompanied by Breaksius Mawlong, 26, from Mawkriah East Khasi District, and Kamwadathmu Hadem, 35, from Krongshnong village in West Jaintia Hills District. The speeding vehicle lost control near Umran on NH-06, veered across the median, and collided with the Swift Dzire coming from Guwahati. The Swift Dzire was carrying four passengers, including a minor.

The impact of the collision resulted in severe damage to both vehicles and injuries to all occupants. The injured from the Swift Dzire have been identified as Mr. Nikhil Harijan Balmiki (3), Mahesh Balmiki (34), Minoti Das (46), and Deepa Das Balmiki (28), all from Azara, Guwahati, Assam.

Tragically, the driver of the Bolero Pickup, Stanphan Ryntathiang, was declared dead on arrival at the Nongpoh Civil Hospital. Following standard procedures, the police conducted an inquest in the presence of Ryntathiang’s family. Despite being informed about the benefits of a postmortem examination, the family requested an exemption, asserting there was no foul play involved. The magistrate granted this request, and the body was subsequently handed over to the relatives for the last rites.

Both vehicles have been towed to the Umsning Police Station for further investigation and safe custody.
