Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman resumed DBT of Rs 3000 each to 8 lakh tea workers’ accounts

Guwahati, Feb 6: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who was in Assam on Saturday, had resumed the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) that’s in its third ohase and about 8 lakh bank accounts in tea garden astates of the state will be benefitted.

She has credit Rs 3000 in each account which is Rs 500 more than the earlier two installments in which Rs 5000 were credited in total

Sitharaman, who had presented the Union Budget 2021-22 onTuesday last, said, aprovision of Rs 1,000 crores has been made in the budget for the welfare of Tea workers in which, the women and children will be especially benifited.

The budget allocations to the tea tribes will benifit the BJP immensely as the both states with highest tea tribe population — Assam and West Bengal — are going for elections this summer.

The tea belts of Brahmaputra and Barak valley of Assam has a population of over 60 lakh people.

“Last year in February, I visited Assam and it was apprised to me that these accounts (belonging to tes tribe people) had some problems especially related to identity like Aadhaar and other issues. I asked the banks to sort it out. “

She added, “Despite COVID-19 pandemic banks officials have managed to shortcomings and appointed Bank Mitras to take care of these accounts which were opened duringdemonetization. Today a people in a tea estate of Assam will have same facility like someone having in Mumbai. It is Prime minister Narendra Modi’s dream to ensure that benefit get the full benefit of the scheme and that is why he insist on use of technology to keep at bay middlemen.”

She said, “ Assam government had requested to Modijee to make budgetary provision for welfare of children and women in tea estates and accordingly we made provision of Rs 1000 Crore in Union budget this year. Prime minister takes care of needs of the all the states. I promise that we will do everything possible for the welfare of people engaged in tea gardens.”
