Tura, Oct 1: The first-ever celebration of International Coffee Day and the Foundation Day of the All Garo Hills Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (AGHMPCS) was held at Babadam, West Garo Hills. The event, graced by Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma as Chief Guest, brought together coffee growers, cooperative members, and local beneficiaries.
During his address, Speaker Sangma highlighted the importance of coffee as a globally cherished beverage and its growing significance in Meghalaya. While coffee is still emerging in the region, he expressed optimism about its future popularity and encouraged farmers to focus on quality cultivation, processing, and branding, with support from AGHMPCS and various government agencies.
Sangma praised the achievements of AGHMPCS and its secretary, Fr. Sunny Mavelil, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between cooperatives, the government, and financial institutions like NABARD in fostering local entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.
The event featured the launch of the Ge’am Gardens and the Vegetable Mission, along with the distribution of coffee machines, saplings, seeds, and cheques to beneficiaries, promoting agricultural development in the region. The celebrations also included the blessing of newly built staff quarters on the AGHMPCS campus.
