Agartala, Jan 7: Five suspected human traffickers accused of aiding illegal border crossings from Bangladesh were arrested in Tripura’s Sepahijala district during a late-night operation conducted on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

The suspects, identified as Jayanta Das (30), Samir Das (38), Jakir Hossain (35), Mobin Mia (34), and Gour Chand Debnath (32), are all residents of Sepahijala district.

The operation, a joint effort by the Agartala Government Railway Police (GRP), Madhupur Police Station, Border Security Force (BSF), and intelligence agencies, involved raids across Puratal Rajnagar, Kaiyadefa, Harihardola, and Konaban, culminating in the arrests.

Speaking to reporters, GRP official Tapas Das confirmed two cases were registered following the detention of illegal Bangladeshi nationals at the Agartala Railway Station.

“We detained five human traffickers from Harihardola Market in Sepahijala District. During the investigation, their names surfaced as being directly involved in helping Bangladeshi nationals cross the international border. With the coordination of the BSF, Tripura Police, and other sister agencies, we arrested them and produced them before the court,” Das stated.

According to official data, in the last four months of the previous year, 30 Indian agents were apprehended for facilitating the infiltration of 98 Bangladeshi nationals and 10 Rohingyas into Tripura.

Last year, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) also conducted raids across India, including Tripura, resulting in the arrest of over 40 Indian agents linked to human trafficking networks.
