Shillong, Feb 24: In a major crackdown on vehicle theft, East Khasi Hills police arrested five bike lifters in separate operations at Sohra and 7th Mile. The arrests were made following weeks of investigation into a bike theft gang operating in the region.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, informed on Monday that a joint operation by Sohra Police Station and the Special Cell led to the interception of two bike thieves at Sohra Rim. The arrested individuals, Babu Marak (19) of Dalia Shella and Sunday N. Sangma (30) of Samanda, East Garo Hills, were caught riding a stolen Suzuki Gixxer (ML 05 AD 4393). The bike, stolen from Smit, was allegedly being transported to be sold to buyers in Bangladesh.

Police revealed that the duo had received the stolen bike at Mawkdok from another group involved in stealing bikes from Shillong city.

Acting on this lead, a follow-up operation was conducted at 7th Mile, where three more suspects—Barabor Namsaw (28) from Jirang, Patharkhmah, Banroilang Iawrod (19) from Kynbahmalai, Phlangwambroi Mawsynram, and Declin Warjri (20) from Nongmensong, Shillong—were arrested. A stolen scooty was recovered from their possession.

Meanwhile, police continued their crackdown in Sohra, where another stolen bike, a Yamaha R15 (ML 05 AA 3297) that had been taken from Mawiong Umjapung on the morning of February 23, was recovered. However, the suspect abandoned the bike at Nongsawlia and managed to escape.

The arrested individuals have been booked under Madanrting PS Case No. 31(02)25 u/s 303(2) BNS and are being produced before the court. Police are continuing their investigation to track down other members of the bike theft network.
