Five-member bike lifting gang busted in Shillong

Shillong, April 1: In a major breakthrough, five members of a bike lifting gang were arrested in Shillong city on Tuesday.

A team from the Special Cell of East Khasi Hills police had first nabbed 3 bike thieves red-handed from 101 Area of the city in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. They have been identified as Timus Warbah (30), Babar Mawblei (26) and Synraplang Makri (23), all from Jirang in Ri Bhoi district, East Khasi Hills police chief Vivek Syiem said.

An Alto car used by them to move around the city to scout for bikes parked on the road side has also been seized. A KTM bike stolen early in the morning on Monday from Malki was also recovered from their possession, he added.

Two more persons – Meaibor Kharryjja (26) from Sohlap Shella and Bakordor Rapmai (24) of Jatap Shella, who helped in handing over the stolen bikes to the buyers in Bangladesh, have also been nabbed.

“The gang has been involved in many bike lifting cases in Shillong. They are in Police custody now,” the SP said.
