Agartala, August 19: Five militants affiliated with the National Liberation Federation of Tripura (NLFT) Biswamohan (BM) faction have surrendered to the Dhalai district police in Tripura after crossing over from neighbouring Bangladesh, according to local authorities.
Biswajit Debbarma, the officer in charge of Ambassa police station, revealed that the five active extremists, who were part of the NLFT Biswamohan faction, turned themselves in at the Chamanu police station during the evening hours.
The surrendered individuals have been identified as Kanta Mohan Tripura, Gertajoy Tripura, Mansubar Tripura, Emang Debbarma, and Nakshatra Debbarma.
Senior police officials stated that the militants did not possess any weapons upon surrender, and they are scheduled for interrogation in the near future.
Kanta Mohan Tripura, one of the militants, explained that their decision to surrender stemmed from the difficult conditions they faced in Bangladesh, including food scarcity and internal divisions among the organisation’s leadership. The challenges posed by military actions in Bangladesh also compelled them to seek a more stable life by surrendering to local authorities in Chamanu.”
Tripura has an 856-kilometre border with Bangladesh, and the militants have been fleeing to their camps after conducting kidnappings and attacks in Tripura, but since the raising of barbed wire fencing along the border and with improving relationships with the neighbouring nation, which has declared zero tolerance towards militancy and the use of its territory for such activities, the militants of Tripura are finding it tough to continue their activities in Bangladesh.
