Tura, Nov 17: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has raised an alarm over unsafe electric poles in various parts of Tura, mainly due to rusting. The Federation has demanded corrective action urgently as these poles are disasters in the waiting.
In a letter to the Additional Chief Engineer of Meghalaya Electrical Corporation Limited (MeECL), Tura on Friday, FKJGP’s Garo Hills Zone President, Pritam Arengh, expressed serious concerns about the precarious state of electric poles in Te∙teng A∙ja, around the Tura Govt. College Field.
He highlighted the imminent threat to human lives due to the deteriorating conditions of two electric poles connecting high tension wires (11 kv) in the mentioned area. The bases of these poles have succumbed to rusting, rendering them hollow. The poles, with serial numbers 05L033110T and 05L033110U, are currently supported solely by the suspending high tension wires.
There is another electric pole connecting a domestic line/low tension wire from the Tura Govt. College Field towards Lower Mission Compound. This pole, bearing serial number 05L0331110, has also fallen victim to rusting and deterioration. Local residents have taken it upon themselves to tie the pole to a tree to prevent a collapse.
In the same locality, Arengh said there is a domestic electric pole situated in the middle of a wastewater drain behind St. Anthony’s School. This pole, which lacks a serial number, is leaning and not erect; and has become a worry for the residents.
Underscoring that electricity is vital for people’s daily needs, Arengh cautioned that it can also cause tragedies if the poles are neglected or ill-maintained.
