The river Jinjiram that flows close to these villages is in a spate. This river has its origin in Goalpara district of Assam, and flows most of its course through Goalpara and South Salmara districts of Assam and then enters West Garo Hills and eventually merging with the Brahmaputra in the south.
In some of these areas, the flood water of the river is almost five to six feet above the normal water level of the water bodies and water has entered into houses and inundated large tracts of agricultural land.
“It’s a bad situation….but there has been no loss of lives reported so far,” Sangma said while reviewing the grim situation.
Lauding the district administration, the CM said, the officials have acted swiftly to ensure there is no loss of lives and are providing general relief to the affected people and providing them temporary shelter.
“Wherever there is danger, the district authorities have moved individuals quickly to safer areas in shelter homes and they are constantly monitoring the situation,” Sangma said.
He said all government support would be provided to the affected victims.
Sangma also distributed essential items to the people of the area. He also met some of the people who are in temporary shelters and instructed the officials that they receive general relief promptly.
The Chief Minister also instructed the officials to coordinate with their Assam counterparts and seek advance reports so that they can prepare ahead if the flood situation worsens.
