Guwahati, July 3: The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Tuesday with over 11 lakh people across 28 districts affected during the second wave of flood.
According to reports, 80 percent area of the state was affected due to the second wave of floods.
“Over 11.34 lakhs people in 28 districts affected by the second wave of floods. Brahmaputra is flowing above danger level in several districts. 13 rivers in the state in full spate. Over 26 thousand people have taken shelter in the relief camps,” said an official.
He said, “167 forest camps inside Kaziranga National Park have been inundated. One rhino calf has died by drowning in flood waters. Over 2200 villages have been inundated and three deaths have been reported in last 24-hours. So far 38 people have lost their lives in flood since May this year in Assam.”
This is the second wave of flooding in Assam since June 16, with Dibrugarh being one of the districts hit by urban flooding. The situation is being closely monitored, and efforts are underway to provide aid to those affected.
Rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Subansiri, and Burhidihing, continue to flow above danger levels. Heavy rainfall is expected in several districts, with alerts issued for Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Karbi-Anglong, and Dima Hasao.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) report on Tuesday, the average rainfall in North-eastern states, stands at Assam received 44.4 mm of rainfall, Arunachal Pradesh saw 59.5 mm, Meghalaya experienced the highest rainfall of 168.0 mm, Nagaland received 20.7 mm, Manipur got 18.7 mm, Mizoram received 29.9 mm, and Tripura recorded 55.8 mm of rainfall.
These figures indicate a significant amount of rainfall in the region, contributing to the ongoing flood situation in several states.
Rescue operations are currently underway in several districts of Assam, including Golaghat, Tinsukia, and Majuli, where teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are working to evacuate stranded individuals. Additionally, the Indian Army has been deployed to assist in the rescue efforts.
The government of Assam has initiated flood preparedness measures, including thematic meetings, VC with District Disaster Management Authorities, and allocation of resources.
Relief materials, including rice, dal, salt, and medicine, are being distributed, and nodal officers have been notified to review flood preparedness measures in their respective districts.
