Flood waters threaten to wipe out Assam’s Dokreshwar temple

Must read

Guwahati, July 6: A historic temple is on the verge of being wiped out due to the rising level of Brahmaputra river and its tributaries in Barpeta district.

As many as 15 villages, including Dokreshwar, Suha, Baradi, and Omura, face severe threats from the rising waters.

“The historic Dokreshwar temple, established by Ahom king Shiv Singha, has been facing the threat of being wiped out if urgent steps are not taken at the earliest. In three areas, water has been leaking from the embankment, and we are very much afraid. If permanent steps would not be taken at earliest, then the whole area will be under water,” said a resident.

He said the situation is critical in Barpeta. ” If water continues to leake and the embankment will breach leading to 8-9 villages coming under water,” the resident said

As the region braces for potential widespread flooding, authorities face mounting pressure to take swift action to protect both the cultural heritage and the livelihoods of thousands of residents in the affected areas.

The residents have reported water leaking through the embankment since Tuesday afternoon.
