Forest officials seize wild animal carcasses in Arunachal Pradesh

Must read

Itanagar, Feb 22: In a major crackdown, forest officials in Arunachal Pradesh’s Papum Pare district seized multiple carcasses of wild animals, including deer, wild hens, and birds, on Saturday.

The seized carcasses were later burned at the Toru forest check gate in Papum Pare. According to officials, the meat was intended for sale at local stalls for consumption during upcoming festivals and other events.

“We received a tip-off that some individuals were attempting to sell wild animal carcasses. A team from the Sagalee forest range conducted an operation and seized both dried and fresh wild meat from the Toru forest gate,” a forest official stated.

Among the seized items were four deer, pheasants, and several barbet birds. Officials noted that wild meat is often transported in government buses from the Pakke-Kessang and East Kameng districts, making it difficult to identify the sellers.

“Saving wildlife is not only the responsibility of the forest department; it should be a community effort,” said Koba, a forest official, urging the public to refrain from consuming bushmeat and support conservation efforts.

Hunting has long been a cultural practice in Arunachal Pradesh, with many villagers traditionally hunting and consuming wild animals. However, the state government has launched awareness campaigns to protect wildlife, and several tribal communities are now actively participating in conservation efforts.
