Guwahati, Nov 7: A former associate member of banned militant outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was killed in an encounter with Assam police in Goalpara district on Tuesday. One more dacoit was killed in the encounter.
The deceased dacoits have been identified as Amar Thapa and Faridul Islam.
Of the two, Amar was accused of being involved with Meghalaya based militant outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA). He had several cases lodged against him and was wanted for murder and robbery.
GNLA mainly operated in Garo Hills part of Meghalaya. It was led by its Chairman Champion R Sangma and Sohan D. Shira as the ‘Commander-in-Chief’. The group was formed in 2009 and somewhat disbanded in 2018 after the encounter of Sohan D Shira.
According to reports, a fierce gun battle took between police personnel and a gang of armed dacoits at Nichinta village in Goalpara district. One police officer was also injured in the exchange of fire.
“After getting specific inputs regarding the presence of armed dacoits, an operation was launched by our police team against the dacoit gang to apprehend them. As we approached, the gang started firing at us. We fired at them resulting in the death of two dacoits,” said a police official.
The officer-in-charge (OC) of Agia Police Station, Manoj Kumar Das, sustained bullet wounds during the exchange of fire.
A vehicle belonging to the gang was also seized during the operation.
“For past many days, the gang of dacoits had looted many families in Goalpara. They have created terror among the villagers in the district. We are behind this gang for a long time,” said a police source.
