Shillong, Nov 11: Former Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Central President, Robertjune Kharjahrin, is making an entry into politics, eyeing a ticket from the United Democratic Party (UDP) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Kharjahrin is set to formally join the UDP during a meeting at Mawkyrwat on Saturday.
The news of his entry into the party was confirmed by Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, the UDP leader and MLA from Mawkyrwat. Sources suggest that Kharjahrin’s move is driven by his aspiration to contest in the upcoming general elections scheduled for 2024.
Party sources revealed strong support for Kharjahrin’s candidacy, with backing from key figures like party president Metbah Lyngdoh and several other party members, including MLAs.
A seasoned advocate and active leader of various pressure groups, Kharjahrin resigned from his position as the HYC president last month, with Roy Synrem assuming the role as his successor.
While Kharjahrin’s name stands out, two other prominent figures, Khasi Author Society (KAS) president DRL Nonglait and former MLA of Mawlai, Process T Sawkmie, are also in the running for UDP ticket.
It’s worth noting that UDP has already formed an alliance with the Hills State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) under the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) for a common candidate. As of now, HSPDP has not put forth any candidate names for the common candidate in the upcoming elections.
