Gangtok, Oct 21: Former legislator and son of Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay, Aditya Golay, on Monday filed his nomination for the Soreng Chakung bypoll as a Sikkim Krantikari Morcha’s (SKM) candidate.
Golay filed his nomination papers before the Returning Officer at the Soreng District Administration Centre. The seat fell vacant after Chief Minister relinquished it in favour of Rhenock constituency, which he is set to represent till 2029.
The bye-elections would be held on November 13.
After filing his nomination, Golay challenged the opposition parties to file their nominations too, saying he doesn’t like to go uncontested. “If I stand for elections, I want to fight. I want to go to the voters, seek their votes and understand their problems,” he said.
Welcoming other political parties to field their candidates for the bye-poll, he further appealed: “please take part in the democratic process”.
Junior Golay was denied a ticket during the general elections earlier this year by his father. Aditya said, “If the party selects another candidate instead of me, I would wholeheartedly support. In the party there is discipline, a system, so we respect the decision of the parliamentary committee.”
Comparing his last campaign in 2019, Golay said in 2019 he contested from Geyzing, but now it’s a privilege to file his nomination from his hometown. “So, in these five years we have made Soreng a district. This is one of the many promises that we have fulfilled,” he added.
Stressing on fulfilling public’s demands, he said that he would like to fulfill the demands be it parking spaces, improvement of education sector or sewerage system. “I will try to ensure that the government passes and sanctions it and works are done on time,” Golay said.
On ongoing development projects in the district, the former legislator said, he would ensure all these projects are completed on time if elected. “We are working on making Soreng an E-district. We want to work on Artificial Intelligence in the democratic and bureaucratic set up for benefit of the public.”
Meanwhile, Satish Chandra Rai filed his nomination for the Namchi-Singhithang Assembly constituency as a Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) candidate.
The filing of nomination would end on October 25.
