Former PHE Minister Tongkhar suggests measures to mitigate flood damages, casualties in Garo Hills

Must read

Shillong, Oct 19: In the wake of the recent torrential rains that have wreaked havoc in the low-lying areas of Garo Hills in Meghalaya, leading to floods and landslides that claimed 17 lives, Mawkyrwat MLA and former PHE Minister, Renikton L Tongkhar, has proposed a series of preventive measures to mitigate future disasters.

Speaking to newsmen, Tongkhar said, “It is a very unfortunate incident, and it should not have happened, but it has happened already. I want to extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones, and also to those who have been injured. May God comfort them during this difficult time. As a government, I am happy to see that we have been prompt in taking action and assessing the situation. I am fully supportive of the government’s efforts to help the people who have suffered due to this unfortunate incident in Garo Hills. But prevention is always better than cure. We should learn from this tragedy, as we know that while we cannot control nature or calamities, we can be prepared to prevent such casualties in the future.”

When asked about specific actions to help prevent future loss of lives, Tongkhar highlighted several key suggestions. “First and foremost, for areas prone to flooding, we should advise people to avoid residing in low-lying areas as much as possible. The government also knows the water levels that can be reached in these areas, so there should be timely warnings issued to residents to evacuate when necessary.”

Addressing the impact of strong winds, he added, “It is not always possible for people to afford reinforced concrete (RCC) houses, but if we can ensure that homes in vulnerable areas are protected—such as by cutting into hillsides to build homes so that the hill itself can shield them—it would be very beneficial. Additionally, retaining walls must be strong, and proper drainage systems should be in place. Erosion often happens when there are no proper drains, so it’s crucial to channel water away smoothly to prevent such damage.”

When asked if he would formally submit these suggestions to the government, Tongkhar confirmed, “Of course, I will. As an MLA and as an individual concerned about the lives of the people, I will submit these recommendations to the relevant departments, whether by writing to the ministers or speaking in the Assembly. It is vital to take every possible step to prevent future tragedies like this.”
