Dibrugarh, Jan 4: Four individuals posing as members of the ULFA(I) were arrested on Friday during an operation in Duliajan, located in eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh district.
The accused have been identified as Bitupon Gogoi alias Jayanta Asom, Bharat Hazari, Bolin Gogoi, and Binod Pahari.
“They had issued extortion notes to three businessmen in the Duliajan area. Following the registration of a case at Duliajan Police Station (Case No. 2/25), we initiated an investigation and successfully apprehended the four criminals using the ULFA(I) name for extortion,” said Dibrugarh ASP (HQ) Nirmal Ghosh while addressing reporters on Saturday evening.
During the operation, police seized a 7.65 mm pistol, one live round of ammunition, 11 mobile handsets, 18 SIM cards, an improvised explosive device (IED), a battery, and ₹49,500 in cash from the accused.
“These individuals were notorious criminals using the ULFA(I) name for their illegal activities. They had also planned to detonate the IED during Republic Day celebrations in Duliajan. However, they have no actual links to ULFA(I),” Ghosh added, noting that several criminal cases had been registered against them in various police stations across Assam.
The investigation into their activities is ongoing.
