Freedom fighter Pa Togan fondly remembered on his 149th death anniversary

Williamnagar, Dec 12: Chisobibra forests, overlooking the mighty Simsang river and less than 10 kms from Williamnagar, will forever be etched in the memory of the Garo people- for this was the place that garo chieftain and freedom fighter Pa Togan Nengminja made his last stand fighting the british forces to ffree his homeland from the foreign yoke.

Today marked the 149th Anniversary of that epic battle in which Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma sacrificed his life fighting to the last man despite the overwhelming firepower and forces that the british used to try and suppress the freedom fighters from Garo Hills.

To honor the memory of this mighty warrior, a special memorial service was held at Chisobibra park where a giant statue of Pa Togan gazes at the horizon.

North Tura legislator and Chief Adviser to Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Thomas A Sangma attended the special event on behalf of the state and placed a wreath in honour of the warrior.Recalling the work and dedication of Pa Togan, Thomas Sangma paid rich tributes to the warrior for lighting the flames of patriotism and standing up against a mighty invading force.

Thomas Sangma said that it is the duty of everyone to contribute, promote and preserve for the welfare of the people towards the state and to the nation as a whole.

Guest of honor and Williamnagar MLA who is also the government chief whip, Marcuise N Marak lauded the Pa Togan Sangma Mahari Association (PTSMA) for organizing the death anniversary of Pa Togan Sangma every year. He also called upon the people to work together for the development and peace of the state.During the programme Miss Manme Marak read out the life history of Pa Togan Nengminja while a patriotic song was sung by students of St. George School, Samanda.

Extra Assistant Commissioner, East Garo Hills Smt. Y W Momin delivered the welcome address and General Secretary, PTSMA Shri. John Sangma offered a vote of thanks.

The highlights of the day include indigenous games & sports, traditional gun salute by DEF of East Garo Hills police, paying floral tribute to the statue of Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma by dignitaries
