From ‘cloak and dagger’ to a uniformed role- new Meghalaya DGP has special trades

Must read

Shillong, May 11: Idashisha Nongrang will be donning the khaki uniform on May 20th when she takes over as the first tribal woman DGP of the state- a spotlight that will be on her for the next two years. But much of her life was spent behind the shadows ( or curtains) as she charted a career in the country’s top anti-espionage agency- the Intelligence Bureau in which she served in Delhi and even the North East.

One of the most challenging trades, or tasks, it’s not every man’s game to be in the Intelligence Bureau, and yet, as a woman she excelled in that field for many years.

Her experience in running the intelligence gathering will come handy in the state police force- especially at this time when multiple attacks of arson or assaults are taking place in what is suspected to be a well calculated attempt to create mayhem by certain vested interest groups, putting the government in an embarrassing position.

She has also been the district police chief on two occasions. Before heading for deputation at the centre, Idashisha Nongrang was also the SP of Jaintia Hills (Jowai) and East Khasi Hills (Shillong). She also served as Commandant of the state police battalion.

She was also among the top officers whose name figured for the post of Mizoram DGP.

Since returning to state cadre in Meghalaya, she has been acting DGP and also holding the position of DGP for Civil Defence and Home Guards.
