Shillong, Dec 19: A once coal-rich village under Sutnga Elaka, East Jaintia Hills district, now dressed up with stunning lighting and Christmas decorations, Moolamylliang Village is transforming into the most enchanting tourism destination in the district.
The 2023 Moolamylliang Christmas Lights Extravaganza was inaugurated by Dr. W. R Kharlukhi, Rajya Sabha MP of Meghalaya, along with Santa Mary Shylla, MLA of Sutnga-Saipung Legislative Assembly Constituency, and Malthus Sangma, Director of Information and Public Relations, Government of Meghalaya, among other dignitaries on Monday afternoon.
The string lights, coupled with various decorative elements, will illuminate the village every evening from 5 PM to 12 Midnight until January 3rd, 2024 aiming to entice tourists who flock to Moolamylliang each year to witness its lush greenery, cleanliness, and renowned Christmas decorations firsthand.
Once reliant on coal mining for revenue, Moolamylliang has transformed into a thriving tourist spot in the recent years especially during the Christmas season, courtesy of initiatives by the Village Headman and the Village Committee. The village now boasts a verdant and inviting ambience during the day, transforming into a radiant and welcoming spectacle in the evening.
