Kokrajhar, March 16: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today asserted that key steps taken by the Centre have led to improved security situation in Bodoland.

Addressing the 57th annual conference of All Bodo Student’s Union at Kokrajhar today, the Home Minister said without All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) efforts, the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Accord would not have become a reality.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to honouring Bodo leaders, Shah announced that a road in Delhi has been named after Upendranath Brahma, the revered father figure of the Bodo community.

“When the BTR Accord was signed in 2020, the Congress mocked me, saying peace would never come to Bodoland. But in these five years, we have fulfilled 82% of the agreement’s clauses, and in the next two years, we will achieve 100% implementation,” he said.

Shah also emphasized key steps taken by the Centre, including the withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from the entire Bodoland region, citing it as a testament to the improved security situation.

The minister reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to linguistic and cultural recognition, noting that the Bodo language has been included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. He also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making the Northeast free from insurgency, blockades, and bandhs.

He projected a bright future for Bodo youth in sports, expressing confidence that athletes from the community would compete in the 2036 Olympics, set to be held in Ahmedabad.

“There was a time when Bodoland was associated with insurgency, unrest, and ethnic conflict. Today, the region is recognized for peace and development,” he remarked.

The Home Minister detailed the government’s financial commitments, stating that ₹15,000 crore has been invested in the BTR region, benefiting its 35 lakh residents. He also noted that hundreds of former militants have joined the mainstream and that, under the BJP-led government, Assam has signed nine peace accords, bringing 10,000 youths away from militancy.

“Today, I see the tricolor in every hand. This is a sight that fills me with joy because, once, this land saw bloodshed every day,” Shah said, lauding the transformation in the region.

Appealing to Bodo youth, Shah urged them to focus on education and skill development to sustain the region’s newfound peace.

“The massive crowd here today shows that the people’s commitment is toward the development of Bodoland and Assam,” he said.
