New Delhi, Sep 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday handed over the presidency of G20 to President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. PM said, “I wish Brazil’s President Lula da Silva the best and hand over the gavel to him.”
Silva also congratulated PM Modi for efficiently leading the G20 bloc and for his excellent work at this summit.
President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said, “…We are living in a world where wealth is more concentrated in which millions of human beings still go hungry, where sustainable development is always threatened, in which government institutions still reflect the reality of middle of the last century. We will only be able to face all these problems if we address the issue of inequality – inequality of income, of access to healthcare, education, food, gender and race and also of representation is at the origin of these anomalies.”
In the closing remarks of the historic G20 Summit in India said that India is responsible for the G20 presidency till November 2023. He also purposed that at the end of November, India hold a virtual session of G20.
“…As you all know India has the responsibility of G20 presidency till November 2023. In these two days, all of you gave a lot of suggestions and placed proposals. It is our duty that the suggestions we have received be reviewed once again so as to see how their progress can be sped up. I propose that at the end of November, we hold a virtual session of G 20. We can review the topics decided in this Summit, in that virtual session…I hope you all will connect in the virtual session…With this, I declare the conclusion of G 20 session…”
Director of G20 Research Group, John Kirton said, “I think it is a significant step forward in global governance. It shows that the G 20 is now at the centre of global governance and put across a broader spectrum of issues than ever before and above all it can do that without the leaders of both Russia and China… Mr Modi emerged as the leader of this summit and I think it is showing that he is really the leader of the global south, rather than those older countries that long claimed that mantle China and Russia too.”
