Shillong, Oct 24: National People’s Party (NPP) candidate, Dr Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma, filed her nomination for the upcoming Gambegre bye-poll on Thursday.

She was accompanied by her husband, Conrad K Sangma, who is also the Chief Minister of Meghalaya and the national president of NPP.

After filing her nomination, Dr Mehtab said all elections are different, and as a party, they are doing their best to reach out to the electorates. On her priorities for the constituency, she said, “My priority for the area is development. Healthcare will be another important priority for me.”

Echoing similar thoughts, NPP’s national president, Conrad k Sangma said, “Every election we have to work hard; we cannot take anything for granted. And all opponents are opponents. We have to make sure that as a party we work hard. Our candidate has to work hard.”

At the same time, he called upon the people of Gambegre constituency to make the ‘right choice’. “Overall Gambegre constituency requires lot of attention. I’m hopeful that this election the people will make the right choice of being with the ruling and the government,” he expressed.

On the chances of the party and the response from the people, he said the party is getting very good response. “We are getting good response and we are very hopeful that we will reach the victory,” he underscored.

He, however, mentioned that they are not being complacent just coz the response is positive. “We are not a kind of party or individuals who will take things for granted and hence we have to work hard. But we are getting very positive response from the constituency,” he insisted.

With the CM’s wife formally joining the fray, the bye-election for Gambegre constituency has truly heated up with other parties also fielding candidates. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has fielded Sadhiarani M Sangma, the lone woman MDC in GHADC as well as wife of former cabinet minister Zenith M Sangma. She comes in with a lot of experience as she is already in GHADC as well as having unsuccessfully contested from the seat twice earlier.

Another candidate is Congress’ Jingjang M. Marak, a close aide of former Gambegre legislator and current Tura MP Saleng A. Sangma. Saleng was the MLA from Gambegre for three consecutive terms, hence his reach and vote bank is very strong, making Jingjang a very strong candidate.

BJP has also joined the fray with GHADC MDC from Tura, Bernard N Marak, also filing his nomination on Thursday.

Two independent candidates have also filed nominations – Sengkrabirth Marak and Jerry A Sangma.
